IMMERSION BREWING

How to Brew French Press Coffee

Rich texture. Heavy body. A slower ritual built around immersion, patience, and warmth.

“The French press does not separate coffee from its oils — it lets the entire character of the bean remain in the cup.”

The French press is one of the most forgiving brewing methods ever created. No precise pouring patterns. No paper filters. No complicated workflow.

What it gives back is texture — dense, rounded, creamy coffee with depth and body that most clean filter methods cannot reproduce.

What You Need

A French press, a burr grinder, hot water, and four minutes. Simplicity is part of the appeal.

Dose 30g
Water 500g
Grind Coarse
Time 4:00
01
Preheat

Rinse the press with hot water to stabilize brewing temperature.

02
Add Coffee & Water

Pour evenly over the grounds and begin the timer immediately.

03
Wait

Allow the coffee to steep undisturbed for four minutes.

04
Break & Skim

Gently break the crust and remove excess foam for a cleaner cup.

05
Press & Pour

Press slowly and serve immediately to avoid over-extraction.

The Hoffmann Method

Letting the coffee rest an additional 5–8 minutes after breaking the crust allows fine particles to settle naturally. The result is surprisingly clean and elegant — almost filter-like clarity with the body only immersion brewing can create.

Best Coffee for French Press

French press rewards sweetness, body, and rounded flavor profiles. Ritual’s Smooth & Rich SCA 84+ was designed for this exact experience — caramel, vanilla, cocoa, and a creamy texture that feels luxurious from the first sip to the last.

WHAT IS SCA SCORE?

An SCA score is a 100-point quality rating for coffee, developed by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Scores are assigned by certified Q Graders after a standardized tasting process called cupping. A score of 80 or higher qualifies a coffee as "specialty coffee," indicating exceptional quality and adherence to high standards.
